How to Make Bug Fixing Fun Again

Modern-day defect tracking software provides ease of use for testers and developers but they can still give a tough time to the marketing/communication side of the startups. They can be left confused and dissatisfied if they’re forced to work alongside one or more tools. How do you plan to appease your customers or users if your marketing team doesn’t happily help its programming co-workers to optimize the side?

Let’s look at what you can do to make bug fixing fun again.

Avoid Tech Lingo

Your communication team is likely to feel hesitant when writing up feedback for a feature/application/new page and filing bug reports because of their limited knowledge of technical terminologies.

Start an Exchange Program

Just as the marketing team lacks knowledge in some technical aspects, the developing team lacks knowledge regarding the daily business and language of the marketing team. Assign a few customer-support tickets to your developers and let them go through your twitter team. Similarly, instruct your developers to introduce their version control system to your sales and marketing team. Ask them to elaborate on how they go about fixing bugs or improving a feature.

Also, if you want to sell new features internally, getting both teams to work together will work in your favor. Plus, it’s recommended to have an actual copy instead of dummy text on your page. This can help a great deal when it comes to valuable feedback rounds.

Organize Little Fix Parties

You shouldn’t need a major breakthrough to throw a party to celebrate and show appreciation to your team. If you hit the 0-bug mark or more realistically: under 10 or 25 or 50 tickets, throw a little party. Get some crisps and drinks. This will motivate your team to perform even better, considering that startups require a lot of work to be done with limited resources.

Promote Culture of Positivity

Something as minor as a negative sentence can set the wrong tone in your workplace. Discourage sentences such as “I can’t reproduce it, so it doesn’t exist.” One can reply, “Tell that to the person who experienced it.” You need go-getters and solution-oriented individuals in your startups rather than those who dwell on the problems and say that they can’t “do” it. Encourage individual problem solving and creativity. This will also lead to employee growth and satisfaction.

Use a Good Defect Tracking Software

For getting the defects resolved on time, a good defect tracking software is a key. Apart from tracking and reporting defects, it lets you monitor the team process and activities that need to be done to achieve the set goals. For a successful business future, the startup must ensure that its base is strong. Acquiring good software is one of the boxes that need to be ticked to ensure that. Modern software integrates easily with existing tools so the concerns regarding integration go out of the window.
